Beat* What bands have the members played with?
Both Pete and Kyle have only ever been in On-Edge, Rudy has been in a few
bands over the years like Cows with Rabies, Altar Ego, Zen
Like, and Misanthropy. RYan was in Silent Frame, and Winter
Funeral.Todd was in super ultra dimensional fight fight
robots, the draggs, for the better, xaarz deciet, mr fangus.
Beat* How did you
get together?
Pete and Kyle started playing guitar together in highschool and have been
at it since. Several members have come and gone over the
last 10 years or so and then, Rudy joined as Keyboard first,
then quickly switched to vocals. Todd came into the band in
2010, and had to quickly learn the set in two practices. We
played about ten shows after that before having some more
practices. Ryan is the newest member, joining just before X-mas,
this last year.
Beat* What
instruments did you learn to play?
We can play anything from Guitar to Acordian, and everything in between,
depending on the member.
Beat* Where do
the band members come from?
Kyle, Pete, and Ryan are from Naches Wa, Rudy is from
Sunnyside Wa, and Todd is fom Wenatchee Wa.
Beat* What genre of
music do you lean towards in your performance?
We play mostly a mix of hard rock and metal.
Beat* Who are
your major influences?
Offspring was a big influence for Kyle and Pete, Rudy pulls a lot of his
influence from older Manson, but now has a tendency to lean
more towards 10 Years and Breaking Benjamin. Todd pulls from
hardcore punk bands, and Ryan Pulls from Ryan Martini of
Mudvayne and Les Claypool.
Beat* How did you
get into the music scene?
We all came from various parts of life. The local scene was kinda scarce
when we started playing shows. With not much to play we made
our own shows, Rudy first came to one of our shows called
Billapalooza in a band called Misanthropy. So in short we
made it our own.
Beat* Have you
met any Famous musicians and how did that affect your
career?
We all have met a few famous musicians, Chris Cornell, Static X, Twisted
Method, and more. We wouldn't say they have affected our
career though. The biggest feeling when seeing bigger bands
perform, is that we are on the wrong side of the barricade.
Beat* Does your
audience inspire you and do you like to interact with them?
We do what we do for us and anyone who can take things from it to help
them get through what ever part of life they are dealing
with. Interacting with the crowd is great fun. Rudy has been
know to "get personal" with his microphone and the crowd.
Beat* What
inspires your music.
Real life, frustration, dreams, Loves, Losses, and everything in between.
Beat* Do you have
a record Label?
Yes we are signed to Turkey Vulture Records. An indie label out of
Rockford Illinois. Formerly of Wisconsin.
Beat* Are you a
member of any music organizations?
Not really, we have done a lot of charity shows and things but not an
official member of one.
Beat* What can
you tell me about your instruments?
When Rudy plays guitar he plays on Fernandez, It was what what was at his
local shop but later found out it would become his "baby".
Kyle Always plays with Schecter, Pete and Ryan are Ibanez
fans. Todd plays Pearl and Mapex.
Beat* Where have
you performed?
All over Washington State/Oregon and parts of Idaho and southern
California.
Beat* How does
the band like to tour or travel?
When you're at our stage in the career, you don't really have that many
options. We've done van, bus and plane. By far the most fun
is by our van, "the one ton death machine". But by plane is
easier.
Beat* What are
your favorite and least favorite venues?
Studio Seven in Seattle WA and The Rogue hero in Bellingham, WA are by far
our favorites. As far as some of the worst it'd have to be
random dive bars and shows in the woods.
Beat* Which songs
do you perform most frequently?
Right now, we're performing a set of the songs on our album. But I'd say
out of all time it'd be Transmit the dead and mutant gooch.
Beat* Do you ever
play any covers?
Yes, we do a metal cover of baby got back from Sir-mix-a-lot, its a fan
favorite.
Beat* Do you have
a set play list at each venue or do they vary?
Sometimes they vary. If there's a lot of energy, we group the heavier
songs together. If it's mellow, we spread it out and keep it
pretty calm.
Beat* Who writes
your songs?
Most of the songs are written by Kyle and Rudy, But everyone puts in their
two cents.
Beat* What are
the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
There really aren't any. It varies depending on what's going on in our
lives, ours ideas/notions, moods and current events.
Beat* Do you
think these topics will change over time?
To a certain extent I think that everything changes in time.
Beat* Could you
briefly describe your music making process?
Rudy tends to write lyrics first, where as Kyle writes music first.. but
sometimes its just a bunch of random guitar parts and we
shake'em up like boggle and see where they land.
Beat* What are
your rehearsals generally like?
We play our songs one by one, (usually too loud) and pin point problem
areas and work on them. Sometimes we just play through a set
to stay fresh.
Beat* Do you have
a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals
more spontaneous?
Different work schedules make it more sporadic, but we try to practice at
least a couple times a week.
Beat* How has
your music evolved since you first began playing music?
It's gotten a lot more intricate.. as we grow so does our music. Like
learning "squiddles" and composing our songs differently.
Beat* What has
been your biggest challenge as an artist?
To stay original. It's hard to be influenced by something and not write
something indentical to it. And learning that sometimes less
is more.
Beat* Have you
been able to overcome that challenge? if so, how?
Trying to keep our music original is something that will always be a
challenge.. as for learning less is more, we realized we
just need a little more objectivity.
Beat* What is the
bands ultimate direction for music?
Being able to make a living doing what we love and Reaching as many people
as we can, while staying true to ourselves, our music and
our fans.
Beat* What advice
do you have for people who want to form their own bands or
be in the music industry?
Know what you want, find people who want the same thing and work at your
craft until you think it's perfect. and if you never think
its perfect and you keep reworking your stuff, you're doing
it right.
Beat* How can
fans-to-be gain access to your music?
The internet is the best tool right now. Our Reverbnation site
(www.reverbnation.com/onedgemetal) has our music and our
merchandise on it. You can also check for upcoming shows and
come out and see us.
Beat* Is there
anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering support?
As a group we'd like to thank Bobbi (Rudy's sister) for being so
supportive. She's helped out emotionally and financially
throughout the years. As well as those that have passed but
helped us out immensely, Virginia (Pete's grandmother) &
Bill.
Rudy- I'd like to thank Rhonda who has helped me stay
positive and pushed me through the wall when times were
hard.
Kyle- There are always more people to thank than can be
listed but to name a few. Stacy, she pushes the band more
than the band does sometimes. Also anyone who spreads the
On-Edge word.
Pete- My dad, his guitar started the whole thing.
Ryan- My mother.
Todd- My grandpa Chuck and my mom.
Beat* Any last words?
Dont stop trying no matter how hard things get.
